UP YOUR ALLEY!

In a city as dense and resourceful as New York, where every square foot seems to have been identified, claimed and utilized, there still manages to exist an abundant amount of under-utilized, unconsumed spaces. Up Your Alley is a proposed extracurricular school between 6th. and 7th. Street in Lower East Side, which fills in a vacant alleyway, transforming this lost interstice by injecting into it a sense of childish levity through continuous serpentine meanders of interwoven program and circulation.

The fabrication strategy draws inspiration from coral and its growth pattern. It is built up of rings made of folded metal sheets, each 4’ deep and in 5 different widths and heights. These modules are connected to the adjacent buildings’ structural slabs. The whole building is thereby suspended above ground, freeing up the alley way itself and letting it function as a pedestrian street.

As the building develops towards the street-front it is budding, in which the building mass expands to take full advantage of the limited space in the alleyway. This action also breaks up the interior spaces and creates shuffles the programmatic relationships.
